Housework Costs Women Dearly

Many women who slave over a hot stove are seeing their wealth boil away. When she does the washing up her money is draining down the plughole. The reason women earn less than men is because they do more housework. Most observers think the 18 per cent difference in earnings between the sexes is caused by women having children and choosing to spend more time in their upbringing.

But the real reason is that women do the harder work, namely cooking, laundry and shopping. As a result they get more tired than men, who confine themselves to gardening and repairs at weekends. Women also have to cook meals at a certain time, just before or just after normal office hours. This means they can only work specific hours and are unable to be in the office at vital times.

The tendency for women to carry a greater burden of domestic chores is a major reason for the gender pay gap. Men may only do four or five hours of household work a week, wives and live-in girlfriends do more than 12 hours of domestic work every week, with destructive results for their careers.

Researchers noted that housework has no effect on the earnings of single people. Only when they form couples do women start to carry a bigger burden. If women are confined more to the home, why not use that time to earn an income from the comfort of their loungeroom?
